Origin: Arabia and East Africa

Growing to a height of about 4-5ft, this succulent plant is a member of the same family as Plumeria. Its swollen, often twisted trunk, is pale gray. The leaves are glossy and club-shaped. The flowers appear almost continuously, are trumpet-shaped, and range from white and bright pink to crimson red. They emit a highly toxic sap which in some places is used as a poison for arrows. Adeniums are not generally grown in moist tropical gardens, but are often seen as a decorative pot plants; they may also be used in rock gardens. They need full sun and well-drained potting mixture. Exotic multi-color varieties can be grafted onto the same plant. See other exotic species of Adenium, photo gallery of exotic varieties and Thai Adeniums - milti-colored, multi-grafted. What is grafted plant

Q: What is a grafted plant?

A: Grafting is a method of vegetative (or asexual) propagation where a piece of one plant (scion) selected for its flowers or fruit and containing the desired genes to be duplicated is inserted into a piece of another plant (rootstock), with a strong vigorous root system, usually a seedling.

Benefits of the graft:

  • - making a clone of the parent plant ensures the same cultivar, since most fruit trees will not come true to seed
  • - taking a scion from a mature plant reduces time to flowering and fruiting (from 10-12 years for a seedling to 2-3 years or less for a grafted plant)
  • - introducing dwarfing, hardiness, disease and pest resistance.
  • - easier propagation method when other means like cutting or seed is not successful
