Alpinia purpurata - Pink Cone Ginger

Small shrub 2-5 ftShadeSemi-shadeRegular waterPink flowersWhite/off-white flowersRed/crimson/vinous flowers

One of the most desirable symbols of Tropics, Alpinia purpurata, also called ostrich plume and pink cone ginger, are native Malaysian plants with showy flowers on long brightly colored pink bracts. They look like the bloom, but the true flower is the small white flower on top. Red Ginger grows in Hawaii, and many Central American nations, including Belize. It is also found in Samoa, where it is the national flower, and is locally called "teuila." It prefers partial shade and moist humid conditions, although it can tolerate full sun in some climates. It tends to like to be well watered and not left to dry out. Ginger can also be grown as a houseplant and its cut flowers can be used in arrangements.

Caryota ophiopelis - Snakeskin Fishtail Palm

Big tree > 20 ftFull sunSemi-shadeRegular waterModerate waterPalm or palm-like

This is an understory palm from Vanuatu (Tanna and Anatom islands) where it grows in the underwood of the humid forests, mainly along the coasts. The Snakeskin palm in habitat grows to about twenty feet tall, but much smaller in cultivation, with a trunk a foot and a half in diameter and when young is very difficult to distinguish from the Caryota zebrina. The leaves of C. ophiopelis are less glossy, a lighter green and thinner or finer, the leaflets less diamond shaped than Zebrina and mature trees would be much smaller than Zebrina. It will tolerate no cold, needs filtered light or shade, rich soil and ample water.
Caryota ophiopellis is a monoecious, monocarpic species (it does fructify only once then dies). Quite rare in cultivation, it arouses an increasing interest due to the unusual and showy coloration, in particular in the young plants. It requires a tropical or humid subtropical climate, a shady position during the young stage, slightly shaded when adult, and draining soils, slightly acidic to neutral, maintained humid. The starch contained in the stem, extracted with a special procedure and cooked to prepare a sort of bread, is still now utilized by the local populations.

Colocasia Thailand Giant - Taro Root

Large shrub 5-10 ftSmall shrub 2-5 ftFull sunSemi-shadeBog or aquaticRegular waterOrnamental foliageFlood tolerant

Taro is native to South India and Southeast Asia. It is primarily grown as a root vegetable for its edible starchy corm, and as a leaf vegetable. It is a food staple in African, Oceanic and South Indian cultures and is believed to have been one of the earliest cultivated plants. It is known by many local names and often referred to as "elephant ears" when grown as an ornamental plant.
The corms, which have a light purple color due to phenolic pigments, are roasted, baked or boiled, and the natural sugars give a sweet nutty flavor. The starch is easily digestible, and since the grains are fine and small it is often used for baby food. The leaves are a good source of vitamins A and C and contain more protein than the corms.

What is grafted plant

Q: What is a grafted plant?

Grafting is a method of vegetative (or asexual) propagation where a piece of one plant (scion) selected for its flowers or fruit and containing the desired genes to be duplicated is inserted into a piece of another plant (rootstock), with a strong vigorous root system, usually a seedling.

Benefits of the graft:

  • making a clone of the parent plant ensures the same cultivar, since most fruit trees will not come true to seed
  • taking a scion from a mature plant reduces time to flowering and fruiting (from 10-12 years for a seedling to 2-3 years or less for a grafted plant)
  • introducing dwarfing, hardiness, disease and pest resistance.
  • easier propagation method when other means like cutting or seed is not successful

This is one of the tastiest and fleshiest Loquat varieties you will find. Its fruit grow up to 2.5 inches, and they grow in clusters of up to twelve. They are easy to peel, and they have deep yellow flesh and a few brown seeds. Big Jim Loquat makes a great background shrub, or you can show yours off as a specimen plant. The Loquat is beautiful when trained as a multi-trunked tree. It can easily be held to about 8 feet in height.

This understory palm has very large, nearly completely circular, pleated, deep green leaves on long, dainty petioles that are so geometric in shape, they barely look real. This is the magnificent and much desired, entire-leaved variety of Licuala peltata, one of the most beautiful species. It is a moderately sized palm with usually only a short trunk, and its crown holds as many as 15 huge, flat, undivided fan leaves up to 7 ft in diameter! Native of Thailand and Malaysia, this species is much more tolerant of cool conditions than nearly any other Licuala and it will thrive in subtropical and tropical conditions and possibly even in protected spots in some frost-free, warm temperate climes, of course always out of the wind. This collectible palm is one of the most ornamental and prized.

Medinilla apoensis - Philippine Pink

Large shrub 5-10 ftSmall shrub 2-5 ftFull sunSemi-shadeRegular waterPink flowersWhite/off-white flowersRed/crimson/vinous flowers

What a beautiful plant! The bright pink clusters of flowers really stand out and are held above the leaves. Philippine Pink is a rare medinilla not usually found in the trade. Bright pink, large up to 2” flowers appear in well-branched, pendant clusters that arise from the distinctively veined foliage. Unlike many in the genus, this species floral show comes from the large, distinct flowers rather than the hanging bracts. What's great about this showy medinilla is that the flowers are not hidden underneath, so it isn't necessary to grow it in a hanging basket-like many other species. It's a tall, upright grower that flowers throughout the summer months. Medinillas perform well as houseplants in warm, bright light areas of the home. Morning sun is acceptable but not hot afternoon sun. It can also be grown in a shady location outside.
Leaves of this plant are very fragile and may be slightly damaged during transportation which does not hurt the plant. Trim as needed and more new leaves will grow quickly.

White Cheesewood (Melodorum fruticosum) is the symbol flower and tree of Sisaket province (Thailand). Very fragrant flowers of unusual shape. It is very similar to Mitrephora - a rare fragrant plant from Thailand close related to Ylang-Ylang. The fragrance is very strong, plus the flowers are much more showy than those of Ylang-Ylang - they change color from pinkish-white to yellow with age. Grows as a compact tree and can be a nice potted specimen. The plants are not too cold sensitive, and tolerate light frost - about the same cold sensitivity as Cananga odorata. Dried flower has medicinal use: tonic, mild cardiac stimulant, hematinic.
